Tips for Families
Simple ways to help your child practice language at home—even if you do not speak English.
Read Together Every Day
Read or listen to a story together. Ask about the characters, what happened, and your child's favorite part.
Talk About Everyday Activities
Talk while cooking, shopping, or traveling. Ask: What do you notice? Why do you think that?
Keep Using Your Home Language
Speak, read, and tell stories in the language your family knows best. Home-language skills support learning English.
Listen, Repeat, and Practice
Choose a short English video or song. Listen, repeat new words, and try using them in a sentence.
Encourage Writing
Invite your child to write a shopping list, short message, or two sentences about their day. Pictures and labels are helpful, too.
Celebrate Small Progress
Praise effort, new words, and growing confidence. Mistakes are a natural part of learning a language.
⏰ Try This 10-Minute Family Routine
2 minutes: Choose a book, game, or video. 5 minutes: Read, listen, talk, or play together. 3 minutes: Let your child teach you something new.
You do not have to speak English to help your child learn English. Your home language matters!
